This research will help me to figure out what medias I should use to display within my multi media exploration.
Dry media– pencil, pen, graphite, charcoal, pastels, Conté, silverpoint.
Drawing is a form of visual art in which a person uses various drawing instruments to mark paper or another two-dimensional medium. Instruments include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoal, chalk, pastels, various kinds of erasers, markers, styluses, various metals (such as silverpoint), and electronic drawing.
A drawing instrument releases small amount of material onto a surface, leaving a visible mark. The most common support for drawing is paper, although other materials, such as cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas, and board, may be used. Temporary drawings may be made on a blackboard or whiteboard or indeed almost anything. The medium has been a popular and fundamental means of public expression throughout human history. It is one of the simplest and most efficient means of communicating visual ideas. The wide availability of drawing instruments makes drawing one of the most common artistic activities.
Most people sketch with dry media, that is why I have researched about it.
Techniques within dry media
Wet media-gouache, paint,acrylic, watercolour.
The PIGMENTS used in all kinds of artists' paints (watercolors, acrylics, oils, etc.) are for the most part the same. Pigments determines whether paints are opaque, transparent, staining, granulating and how strong colors are when mixed.
BINDER IN WATERCOLORS:
Gum arabic (sap from acacia trees) is the traditional binder of watercolors. Gum arabic is a "weak" binder, meaning it dissolves in water and does not form a "film" when it dries. These properties make watercolors easy to re-wet and re-work even after paints have dried.
WATERCOLOUR PAPERS are the surface most artists prefer for painting with watercolors. The best
papers for watercolors are made from fibers that are strong enough to withstand water (cotton is ideal).
An important component of papers for painting is sizing, a starch or gelatin that coats the paper fibres. Sizing makes paper stronger when wet and keeps paint from immediately absorbing into the paper.
Hot-pressed papers have a smooth surface that is especially useful when incorporating pen or pencil drawing with finer lines. Cold-pressed paper surfaces are textured and produce nice effects when pigments settle into the valleys of the paper.
GOUACHE
Gouache is opaque watercolor that dries with a velvety matte finish. The opacity of gouache is the result of high concentrations of pigment and sometimes from pigments ground to a larger particle size. White pigments and other opacifiers are sometimes added to make gouache opaque, most often in lower quality brands.
Gouache is popular for illustration because the opaque colors and the even matte surface do not produce a glossy sheen or glare that can interfere with photographing, scanning and reproducing artwork.
As you can see here I have explained a bit about wet medias, I can use these to my advantage because I will be able to make a background pattern using them if I wanted to, combined with dry media such as pen to do other backgrounds, I will first have to complete my multi media exploration first in order to find out which will be the most appropriate for my work.
Digital media- Adobe products, 3D modelling, info graphic downloads, font downloads.
These are used to edit, enhance and define pieces of work. This is helpful because you're able to define your work and make it look better than it did on paper. Some artists even just use digital media because of the development of technology within art. For example, artists that use Wacom tablets draw straight onto the digital media and edit it throughout there, this is really clever because you're able to edit quickly and precisely and it looks amazing. Traditional media is still good but because of the advancements in technology, artists are turning to the Wacom tablet to create more precise work for the brief they have because of the development of HD movies and 3D movies, sometimes they're forced to not use traditional media because of the high quality image they need to produce.
Overall, using digital media is really helpful for artists that want to produce something precise and/or edit their images to make them more 'sleek'.
This research on digital media has helped me because I will now use digital media to edit my cards and packaging to make them more professional looking, I will also use it to create my boards where I will be displaying and advertising my card game which will be shown digitally and on a printed board which I will give in as a physical final piece at the end along with my packaging and cards inside.
Dry media, graphite, charcoal, chalk, colored pencil, scratch board, etc. These are angled more towards speed and control (quality can be obtained in any medium if you give the appropriate amount of time to the piece). For example, pencils are a lot easier to get clean, straight lines with than paints. However, if you want to deal with color, paints can be better, if you mix enough of a particular color you wont have as much variance in color as if you'd use markers (with the exception of Copic) or colored pencils.
Wet medias are mostly used for speed and precision.
By looking at wet/dry and digital media, has helped inform how I'm going to use them within my own work.
I will use them within my multi media exploration when producing my concepts for my cards and packaging within this brief. This will help me realise which medias I want to use within my project.
I will complete my exploration of multi medias and find out if I even want to use multi media within my project. This research has really helped me look at all the different types of medias I could use and how techniques within them medias could be used with technologies we have.
UPDATE: I have completed my multi media exploration for my project and decided to use wet and dry media for my project then edit them on digital medias.
This will happen by me using wet and dry media for the backgrounds of my cards and packaging. The non conform cards will have a background of splattered paint, which I will scan in and put onto the digitally made outlines of the non-conform cards.
The conform cards will have a dry media background of black lines to show the conform side of the game, it will be simple and black whilst the non-conform will be all different colours splattered, to show the difference of the two different types of cards. I think this displays the point of my work very clearly as it shows the difference between conform and non-conform graphics, which helps the player choose which side they would be on and therefore helps them to successfully complete the tasks that they're given, which will be the opposite of whatever type of graphics they like best.
The first card in the pack will also display the two patterns and the players will pick which pattern they like the most and they will then play with the cards that have that pattern on them. I think this is an effective way of using medias within my work and using techniques and technologies as I have used painting and drawing techniques within making the patterns for the backgrounds and I have used technologies by scanning the backgrounds in and digitally enhancing them using Photoshop, then placing them onto the outlines of my cards.
I have used this research to also inform my digital media use as I have used Adobe Illustrator to create the outlines of my cards and the typeface that goes on them, I done this because of the research about how society has developed so artists use a lot of digital media to create their designs to the best standard they can be, so I have used digital media/technologies to create pristine cards and packaging and edit them so they look professional.
The packaging is a net, which will have both backgrounds put onto it to show the two variations of the graphics vs graphics cards, I think this will advertise the game well, as well as me putting a little overview of the game on the back of the packaging, a title on the front of it, and it being a physical outcome as well as the net being online on my Behance.
Overall, this research has helped inform my use of multi media within my project using different medias, techniques and technologies to complete my final outcomes and my work being up to a high standard in order to enable a good outcome. It has also informed me how there are different types of medias and how I could use the techniques within them to inform my ideas, therefore using multi medias within my work has proven to be effective and helped me to use the medias effectively within my work and develop it to a high standard using multi medias, techniques and technologies.
By doing this research I have been able to investigate graphic media, techniques and technology, use graphic media, techniques and technology diversely, coherently, indecently and innovatively.
